2025 - Graduate Student Dissertation Award in Phylogenetic Comparative Plant BiologyThe Botanical Society of America seeks applications for the Graduate Student Dissertation Award in Phylogenetic Comparative Plant Biology. Thanks to an anonymous donor and long-time BSA member, the Society established an endowed fund to support the Ph.D. research of graduate students in the area of phylogenetic comparative plant biology, broadly speaking, from genome to whole organism. Research proposals for the award should have a strong focus on questions that address phylogeny of a group of organisms or trait evolution across one or more clades or biotic relationships between lineages that are phylogenetically patterned. Graduate students in other disciplines whose work may bring novel insights into comparative plant biology are also encouraged to apply. AJ was a long-time member of BSA and and the leading organizer of the Beringia symposium at Botany 2022 in Anchorage, has led Colloquia at Botany Conferences, and was a staunch supporter and promoter of women in botany and diversity at all levels. Her research endeavors were highly integrative, spanning traditional specimen-based science, paleobotany, phylogenomics, biogeography, and computational biology. BSA members worldwide are eligible for support, and priority will be given to students and postdocs that demonstrate financial need. 2023 - Graduate Student Dissertation Award in Phylogenetic Comparative Plant BiologyThe Botanical Society of America seeks applications for the Graduate Student Dissertation Award in Phylogenetic Comparative Plant Biology. Thanks to an anonymous donor and long-time BSA member, the Society established an endowed fund to support the Ph.D. research of graduate students in the area of phylogenetic comparative plant biology, broadly speaking, from genome to whole organism. Research proposals for the award should have a strong focus on questions that address phylogeny of a group of organisms or trait evolution across one or more clades or biotic relationships between lineages that are phylogenetically patterned. Graduate students in other disciplines whose work may bring novel insights into comparative plant biology are also encouraged to apply. The award of up to $10,000 may be used to support equipment and supplies, travel for research and to attend meetings, and for summer support. It is anticipated that the award will be made annually. Kaplan was a leading researcher in the area of plant form, where he sought to deduce fundamental principles from comparative developmental morphology. He spent most of his professional career at the University of California Berkeley. Through his own work and the work of the many graduate students he mentored, he had a profound effect on the fields of plant development and structure. Donald Kaplan always encouraged his students to work independently, often on projects unrelated to his own research.
